It's a case of "The large print giveth but the small print (well, the footnotes anyway) taketh away."Another example: where and when and why did Judaism become monotheistic and leave behind the henotheistic view that other gods might exist but were subordinate? ("No other gods BEFORE me") In some ways this is the central point of the book, since the origin of monotheism is probably the most significant development in God's biography. Well, we get a good discussion in the text and footnotes, but (spoiler alert!) at the end of this chapter he leaves all this scholarship behind (footnotes suddenly disappear) in favor of a speculative claim that this was due to the Babylonian captivity: Marduk's defeat of Yahweh gave rise to cognitive dissonance and made the Jews decide to go all the way and insist that Marduk didn't even exist. I think few will find this, or many of his other conclusions convincing. The book is worth reading and I learned a lot. But don't believe everything you read.

If you read Reza Aslan's book "Zealot," do not expect this book to be the same or even the same style. That is not a criticism but a credit to Reza's immense scholarship. God-a human history takes on a topic of massive scope and brings information together from many different disciplines and puts it in a readable format. Reza introduces the earliest evidences of humans relating to a god. For example, if describes a one inch feminine idol that was found in Israel that dated back about 300,000 years, which predates Homo sapiens. Very deep subject matters are covered such as whether or not the god concept developed in service of early beings or was it hard wired. Many early people and cultures are considered. It was interesting to note that the earliest communication on cave walls was done by women and that the same symbols were used in caves on opposite sides of the world. Reza Aslan shows the flow that ultimately developed into the major religions of today. Those are just some tidbits but there is much, much, more. It was a good read for me and it led my mind in many fascinating directions. Aslan's work isn't just conjecture but is well documented. He has 105 pages of notes that allow the reader to verify what he says and follow the research deeper into other directions if he or she so chooses.

I devoured this book in a day or two, I didn't want to put it down. Growing up Catholic, but leaving the church as an adolescent, and now a deep spiritual person without religion, I found this book to be just what I needed. Aslan writes in a way that speaks to theological academics as well as spiritual lay people like myself. This book gave me a lot to think about, questions to ponder, and relief to see in writing beliefs I have always carried, but didn't know the historical facts to back up.Upon finishing God, I bought and read Zealot, another one of Aslan's books.I look forward to reading his other books, and possibly even starting a book club with my community to start conversation about the nature of God.

More like a "personal" history, Azlan silences the critics who complained that "Zealot" wasn't footnoted sufficiently, but this will garner a whole new range of criticism for its primarily-Western "people of the book" approach to God, but it's really more how Azlan himself has sifted and sorted through his prodigious religious knowledge to come to an understanding of the unity of God. An an unbeliever, I appreciate his scholarship, his synthesis, and his knowledge of the West; I remain perplexed how someone who can parse the development of ideas and trace them back to their mythic sources can remain a believer in a Supreme Being. But that aside, he's a terrific writer and thinker. I liked "Zealot" even more because it was so focused on the development of how Jesus became central to Christianity, and how the actual human being (assuming that he actually lived, and that at least I believe) fit into his own Zeitgeist.

comprehensive, dry, easy read. Gets specific and material is fairly current with consideration to the economic conditions and finance resources as they are in 2012 - I realize there are a few editions with the same cover - so I'm referring to the 2009 version I had. A lot has changed even since 2009, but the information was geared toward fundamentals -- which are pretty stable in all economies. For example, terms used in real estate, typical financial resources (titles, limitations, duties), contract terminology, the process of buying and selling, etc. All in all a good solid book to start with. I found it helpful and rarely had to supplement this reading for indepth explanations.

Real Estate Principles is an extremely readable, easy to follow introductory text to Real Estate. The book is well laid out with many excellent examples and studded with references to superb websites. The graphics are great and the exhibits well thought out.The 'Time Value' of money section is one of the best I've ever read and will help the novice understand this critical aspect of real estate finance/analysis.The Appraisal chapters thoroughly cover the market, cost and income approaches and the Legal chapters cover the essentials of notes, mortgages and deeds.'Concept Checks' through out the chapters allow readers to verify their understanding of key points with solutions provided at the end of each chapter.The book is extremely well organized with each chapter beginning with an outline and a list of 'Learning Objectives'. In addition, each chapter ends with a Summary, a listing of Key Terms and Study Questions.'Career Focus' is another recurring theme featuring side bars tied to the main text that outline different careers tracks available in real estate.

I needed this book for my real estate class at UW-Madison. It was very helpful in explaining concepts that I didn't understand in class and steps in calculations. I did significantly better on my exams when I studied with the book versus just studying with class notes.

This book is an easy read and a good foundation for Real Estate. I am a realtor and brought it for someone looking to get into real estate. I believe the principles in the book will give a student who knows nothing about real estate a overview of what it takes to succeed in the business in terms of information.

This book does a good job of teaching introductory real estate finance concepts in an accessible way.

I got this book for my Real Estate class that i took at UIC and the price was unmatched. I rented the book but the quality of it was great and I had absolutely no issues with it. Also a great book full of insight. Highly recommend it!

As always with Martin Meadowsâ€™ books this book is weâ€™ll-resasertched and backed up with solid case studies that proves the author has authority to write about what he instructs.Oe of my biggest difficulties un the past ten years has been both motivation and finding the time to exercise. Martin covers all of that here and in chapter two offers up good strategies ad tips for carving out the time for getting to the gym or crating a gym at home. By making health a priority we can discipline ourselves to enjoy exercise and drive that motivation to do something about it.Chapter 3, stay motivated to exercise, offers great tips such as:- Donâ€™t think in terms of â€œall or nothingâ€ on your lazy days.- Keep records of your workouts.- Start a chain in your calendar and cross off days with a big red X- Make your goals Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-boundChapter 4 tackles a big problem for me, especially after tears of training when I hit a plateau and didnâ€™t enjoy exercise anymore. I went from a few workouts a week to doing some pushups to nothing. Thoughtful insights into motivation to exercise. Especially helpful to keep trying until you pick the right form of exercise. I always thought it was just me. This is an excellent companion to his diet book.

Basically a knock-off "The Power of Habit"Skims the surface of Self-Discipline without going deeper.Large font, 1.5 spacing. The amount of substance in this book could be contained within 20 pages if it were printed with normal font-size and spacing.While the book has a well designed cover, simple structure, it lacks any substance.Martin Meadows essentially copies and pastes between his books.

I realized when I read this book that I hated to exercise because I had never found a sport that I enjoy. So I stopped trying to get up early and go running (which I hate but that everyone recommends doing) and started to think of what I had liked to do in the past. I remembered my fondness of swimming which got me to start to swim again. I now look forward to exercising because I took this book's advice to find something that I enjoy.

This actually got me started on a sustainable long term weight loss journey. I have always loved working out but lacked the actual motivation to begin. I read this book and I often remind myself of the principles. I read this in September 2017 and itâ€™s now April 2018, I have since then lost 35lbs using the concepts of discipline. Very grateful for this book.

Some good tips, but overall there's a lot of "do this," "don't do this," but do what you like, as long as it's rock climbing. Why discourage bike commuting?? Or anything that someone who reads it might find enjoyable. Maybe people like Zumba instead of classic dancing.There are suggestions in there that are very helpful; you just have to wade through the judgments.

Another good and motivating book from Martin Meadows! If you find working out to be a choir, you may view things differently after reading this book. Worth the read.

I've picked up some good tips from this book, especially the tips on habit forming. Left out one star because some of the ideas are common sense, lol.

An excellent and thought provoking book, that for me, had almost immediate applications in my own life. He does an excellent job of articulating things that had floated on the edges of my own consciousness for quite some time.In my opinion it's HUGE mistake to think this book is a treatise, let alone a single topic analysis on PTSD. It's not even about PTSD, even if it comes up in some sections. I saw the author speak last week and believe me, that wasn't what he focused on by any stretch. Sure, he uses his time with soldiers and interviews vets (plus many others touched by war in various ways) as jumping off points to look at the broader societal issues. But it's a jumping off point, not the actual topic.Tribe is really an analysis of the slow disintegration of our evolutionary impulses to cooperate and seek one another's support as we work towards a common good. It's not an American problem, or even a Western civilization one, but the intended consequence of modernity, dating back at least few hundred years. Obviously recent decades have made this isolation and dissolution of our collective cohesion much worse, and Junger does a really thoughtful job of looking at it from a whole range of perspectives.

Upon reading Jungerâ€™s article in a recent Vanity Fair article on the affects of PTSD (itâ€™s not exclusive to just war veterans, by the way), I was under the assumption that a large portion of this book would be dedicated to that. I was wrong. Sebastian dove much deeper than that.Tribe focuses on the growing disconnect weâ€™re experiencing with one another as a society, and the far reaching consequences of that disconnect. Itâ€™s an eye-opening letter to the American public that politely reminds us that weâ€™ve lost our way when it comes to being a closer knit community as a whole.Not always, of course. In his book, he touches on how tragedies such as 9/11 brings us closer - albeit briefly. But once the dust settles, we fall back to our old ways.This is not a book about war, the military, or PTSD. Itâ€™s about the loss of belonging, caring for our fellow man as we do about the ones closest to us. He uses a parable about a brief encounter he has with a homeless man as a young adult. The man sees that heâ€™s on a backpacking trip on his own and asks if he has enough food for his trip. The young Junger, afraid of being mugged for his supplies, lies and tells the man that he has just a little food to last him. The homeless man tells Junger heâ€™ll never make it on what he has and hands him his lunch bag that he more than likely received from a homeless shelter - probably the only meal the homeless man would have the entire day. Sebastian feels horrible about himself after that, but uses that lesson as a parable for Tribe.Think of your fellow man before thinking of yourself. Because without that sense of humanism, togetherness, belonging, weâ€™re all dead inside.

I have long wondered why when it was time for me to return to America from Vietnam I was apprehensive, perhaps even a bit frightened. Mr. Junger answered my question. I left my tribe.Now, years later, a libertarian-conservative, I had even allowed myself to hold the political left in contempt. This book shames me and I suspect that in that regard the book will even affect change in me.I'm supposed to be writing about this book, not myself, but for me the book was not just interesting and informative. It opened up something long suppressed and I am grateful.If you are a vet you should read it. If you are so highly partisan that you regard those other guys as evil, please read it.It's not just a good book.

I'll be frank. I've not been a big fan of Junger's previous books, but in this book he puts his finger on one of the most important cultural realities of the twenty-first century, the loss of tight-knit communities. Certainly, Robert Putnam (in his important book BOWLING ALONE) and others have documented similar realities, but Junger's work stands out for two reasons: 1) it is immensely accessible and 2) he arrives at this conclusion from a unique perspective, that of his observation of the military experience. One of his central themes is the idea that soldiers in combat situations have such an intense experience of interdependency, solidarity and community that they often struggle upon returning to civilian life in the US, in which there rarely is any similar sort of community to which they can belong.TRIBE is well-worth reading for pointed socio-political questions it asks about American civic life and for the keen observations it makes about the combat experience. Thankfully, Junger doesn't offer any easy fixes, but on the other hand, he doesn't do much to stir our imaginations about how to cultivate in American civilian life the sort of solidarity that combat engenders. At times, he does tend toward idealizing the Native American experience of tribal life, and that sort of idealism won't be particularly helpful for addressing the dissolution of community that we so intensely experience. Regardless, this is a timely book that should not only widely read, but also widely discussed.

"Letters" is an adroitly written instruction book for beginning writers. Incorporating an imaginary correspondent, Mario Vargas Llosa writes a series of letters to a young protege sharing his years of literary experience and outlining the principles that make a novel. It is an interesting vehicle for an instruction book and it works. Most books of how to write are overloaded with superfluous detail and have the annoying tendency to be academic in the approach to writing. This book is breezy, conversational, loaded with brilliant insight and fun to read. Sighting loads of examples from classic and not so classic novels he brings to life essential topics of style, voice, time, point of view and other narrative tools that the masters of the novel have incorporated for hundreds of years.Many of the novelists Vargas Llosa sites for his many examples are unknown to me and he has roused my interest in reading their books. Alas, many of them are not translated into English (at least not that I can find on Amazon). But that does not diminish the satisfaction derived from reading this diminutive book. His best advice to any writer is to be a great reader. An example he has clearly followed himself.

This is an elegant, erudite reflection on fiction writing as passion and philosophy. Like a caring, older companion, It offers the aspiring novelist much in the way of encouragement and inspiration. But be warned: it is not a how-to manual focusing on a workshop-type approach to producing fiction. Instead, it invites the reader on a journey through the often lonely and troubling pathways that all writers inevitably have to navigate. Stimulating and rewarding.

This is a fabulous reference go for defining what makes fiction successful or a total failure. Lovely examples, passages that explain narrative space and time we'll.

Except for Strunk and White's The Elements of Style and Aristotle's Poetics, I have found books on writing unhelpful and mind numbing.I wouldn't put Llosa's Letters to a Young Novelist in the same category as The Element of Style or Poetics, but it is excellent, and though I'm not young, I learned a few things and reminded of many other others.

The book written by Nobel laureate is not the true representation, but by a voracious reader who have delicate understanding of novel structure. And he doesnâ€™t define the limits but the expanse.

i cant believe the knowledge this man had at the age of 21. a complete genius. with a well rounded knowledge of all there is to know. he has greatly inspired me, i wish he were still around and i can only hope to incarnate some of his wisdom in my travels of this world.

Happiness is seeing an old Alan Watts book brought back to life! And this one happens to be about happiness. How to be as happy as your dog, or at least as happy as our author, whom we are happy to meet again. As I open the book with anticipation, I realize that back in the day when Mr. Watts was with us and communicating, the advent of "Positive Psychology" was still years away. Today, as I review this idol's view on happiness, we have vast research findings that provide facts about what happiness is and how best to be favored by it. For one, we know that sharing experiences with others provides more long term happiness than having things. We know that folks who find reasons to feel grateful are happier than those who don't. Helping others provides happiness. We could Google for more of the research, but let's get on to getting into Alan Watts.Â He wrote this book when he was only 24 years old! It came out in 1940, and was then republished in 1953. It's almost 80 years old. hard to believe. To have the kind of ideas, and ability to express them so well, at such a young age, is certainly remarkable. I can't imagine offering any piece of wisdom to someone of my father's generation without hearing a comeback relativizing my statement and pointing out its weaknesses. Young Mr. Watts has no such concern. He begins with great confidence, as he is but passing along wisdom from time immemorial, from the oldest of the spiritual literature, of Vedanta. He confesses the truth from the get go, and quite simply. You can't run away from your feet, nor can you run after them. While some may write about how to obtain happiness by changing one's circumstances, he explains, and while others may write about how to obtain happiness by changing oneself, our young mister Watts notes that happiness is not something we obtain by doing anything to obtain it. Rather, happiness arises from knowledge, from the awareness of non-duality, which ends the illusion of a self that needs to find happiness. In other words, if you want to be happy, become enlightened! That puts it simply enough. One of the themes that Watts rides comes from his integration of Jungian psychology, with its resolution of the opposites, and Eastern philosophy that represents unity via the mandala of the yin/yang symbol. Suffering comes from separation, the opposition of self and world. Happiness comes from acceptance of both the reality and the illusion as partners. In fact, Watts considered this book to be about acceptance, profound acceptance, as the key to happiness. We are more familiar with the idea today, if no more poetic or as handy as Watts to describe the way we ride the paradox. It is interesting to read what Watts has to say about Christianity, especially in light of current events. He notes that the idea of acceptance is present, but quite hidden, in the doctrines of Christianity. He notes that this religion is based much more on adherence to doctrine while Eastern religions are more concerned with states of mind. If we turn to the Christian mystics, however, the theme of acceptance finds a place. Christianity provides a path for the non-mystic, to contemplate the heart of Jesus and note how it affects one's motivations. Somewhat like the Higher Power in Alcoholics Anonymous and their slogan, "fake it until you make it," acting in a manner similar to Jesus gradually brings about the inner experience of communion with Jesus, and thus God. The book is fun to read, not just because of Watts' readable style, but also because the positions he takes and the material he discusses, coming from an earlier era, and yet talking about the same things we talk about today, gives these themes an aura of inevitability and timelessness. I'm wondering if his words will have a special impact on today's readers. Reaching near the end of his offering, he quotes Saint Augustine, "Love, and do as you will." In this context, sin is more easily understood as "missing the mark," as Watts describes sin as "bad taste; it is sensationalsim as distinct from sensibility." Here he is introducing a note of the "postmodern" perspective (which I don't think existed as a vocabulary word during Watts' time) on what otherwise gets treated in a very dualistic manner. You don't need to be a fan of Alan Watts to enjoy and benefit from this book.Â Â

Alan Watts was a philosopher in the truest sense. He was beholden to no tradition. His awareness of Truth was not learned through rote memory nor some grand rationalization. Think the reality of the Gnostic experience vs the ritual of Organized Religion and the promise that someday you will meet your maker. Until then just do the best you can. The Religions of the World System would make a Sisyphus of each of us. It is better to stand on the rock than push it up the hill only to slide back down the hill only to push it again and again and again and where she stops nobody knows. The true gnostic experience gives us an eternal base from which to learn to think for oneself. The worldly way of Worldly Religion is to build one's understanding upon sand. The direct way, the Jesus Way, the Buddha Way, the Lao Tzu Way, the Rumi Way, is built upon the rock of God-given insight. To be fair to Worldly Religions I will admit that as far as institutions go they are for the most part like most other such institutions, biased. No corporate religion preaches the Sermon on the Mount. Not Really. Corporate Religion does not set anyone free. Corporate Religion is an oxymoron. Both words in their fundamental sense simply do not mix. What comes of the blind leading the blind is not being found but lost. Overly proud of dualistic thinking all corporate religions East and West preach relative truth as though it were absolute Truth. The Truth. A sermon preached by those that cannot see nor hear spiritual truth have not yet directly experienced the Truth for themselves and so cannot truthfully preach what they themselves do not truly know. Preachers of Division are not known by the likes of a Jesus. Jesus, the Buddha, et al, were not concerned with earthly riches, but with eternal riches. Spiritual riches. A Knowing that passes worldly understanding does not preach piecemeal sermons. The Good News is not about winning the Lottery. It is about winning eternity. Intellection, be it kataphatic or apophatic are by their divided nature always going to come up short. Being untethered by Spiritual Awakening is like a dog chasing its own tail. Until one has grown weary of living in the pig sty of the World System in its many guises one is and will remain lost. The prodigal son or daughter doesn't have to learn a system, they merely have to return to themselves, to their own inalienable true inner self. Knowing the Truth cannot be taught by anyone but one's own true self. Others can guide but they cannot do for anyone but themselves. Give up on the false and the Real will come to your rescue. Decide that the only truth you are interested in is the Truth and the whole Truth so help you Truth and the Truth alone shall set you free. Sit down in a cave or under a tree and don't get up until the false has fled and the Real will be known not through an elevated state of mind but a transcendent state of Being. Or, in your journey from false to false you might just have a Gnostic Experience on the Road to Damascus. The Spirit listeth where it willeth. No one tells the Spirit what to do. The humble or the weary sometimes just let go and God steps in. Call God what you will for I am speaking about that which is beyond words. Have no images before me. No pictures, no maps, no concepts. Until one has a direct experience with the Spirit of Existence one simply does not know what one is talking about where spiritual reality is concerned. Some things can only be said in silence. The great sages preach silence. All sermons from the valley are relative. It is to the oneness of the Summit that Truth is revealed to the sincere seeker. The hubris of intellect thinking too much of thinking is a dead end. The lesser cannot know the Greater lest it become one with the Greater. "From the first, totality is a unitive one!" Hui Neng. Truth is Unity. Unity is Love. God is Love. No Love, no God. All dogs are Dogs. Once seen the Truth is everywhere. Relative Religions would make what is Real unreal. Divided. There is no separate peace. The fallen mind would make straw dogs of each of us. Fakes. Conditional happiness is not true happiness. Happiness is not a goal, it is who we already are but have forgotten lost in the World Dream as it were. Its Wake Up Time. Read Watts, he was a far greater writer than me. His book "The Book on the Taboo Against knowing who you are" is one of the best explanations of the Truth I have ever read. All of Alan's books one way or another are about the effect of taking the Blue Pill. Sit down, shut up, and listen. Follow your breath home to a great Mansion with more rooms than can be counted built upon the rock of ages, the Truth.

About the Author

Joseph W. Check, Ph.D. is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Educational Leadership in the Graduate College of Education, University of Massachusetts, Boston. He completed his B.A. at Boston College and his M.A. and Ph.D. in English at Tufts University. His prior publications include Politics, Language, and Culture: A Critical Look at Urban School Reform (Praeger, 2002), co-editorship of Writing Within School Reform, a monograph series of the Annenberg Institute for School Reform at Brown University, and book chapters and articles on literacy, practitioner inquiry, and urban school reform. He has supervised dissertations in school reform, professional development, literacy, home/school interactions, and special education. He has served as Principal or Co-Principal Investigator for numerous grant-funded professional development programs including a 4-year, $4M practitioner inquiry project in 14 urban school districts, funded by the DeWitt-Wallace Reader’s Digest Foundation. He is an experienced classroom instructor in master’s and doctoral level research courses.

Russell K. Schutt, PhD, is a professor and the chair of sociology at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, and a lecturer on sociology in the Department of Psychiatry at the Harvard Medical School (Massachusetts Mental Health Center). He completed his BA, MA, and PhD (1977) at the University of Illinois at Chicago and a postdoctoral fellowship in the Sociology of Social Control Training Program at Yale University (1977–1979). His other books include Investigating the Social World: The Process and Practice of Research, Fundamentals of Social Work Research (with Ray Engel), Making Sense of the Social World (with Dan Chambliss), and Research Methods in Psychology (with Paul G. Nestor)―all with SAGE Publications, as well as Homelessness, Housing, and Mental Illness (Harvard University Press) and Social Neuroscience: Brain, Mind, and Society (coedited with Larry J. Seidman and Matcheri S. Keshavan, also Harvard University Press). Most of his peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters focus on the effect of social context on cognition, satisfaction, functioning, and recidivism; the orientations of service recipients and of service and criminal justice personnel; and the organization of health and social services. He is currently a coinvestigator for a randomized trial of peer support for homeless dually diagnosed veterans funded by the Veterans Administration.
